Crystal Jade Kitchen (翡翠小厨) @ Holland Village

04 APR 2009

Went for a family dinner @ Crystal Jade Kitchen… Finding a parking spot in Holland Village on a Sat evening is impossible… By the time I parked, the family’s already seated. Crystal Jade Kitchen was perpetually busy… Service was competent initially until they completely forgotten one of our order… Food wise was not spectacular, but decent enough.

Whilst waiting, Bro ordered some bites while waiting for me Fish Congee ($6.80), Steam Pork Rib in Black Bean Sauce ($3.40), Steam Gluttonous Rice – Chicken ($4.20), and Pan Fried Carrot Cake ($3.40).

Delicious with the Salted Egg Yolk!

Delicious with the Salted Egg Yolk!

The Pork Ribs, Gluttonous Rice and Carrot Cake are staples which we usually order, and they were quite nice. The Gluttonous Rice was the best of the lot especially with the salted egg yolk within! Hmmm… delicious!!

We proceed to order a Set Menu for 4 @ $96.80, which include a 3-Mixed Roast Platter(Roast Chicken, Char Siew & Jelly Fish), Soup for 4, Seafood Fried Rice, Prawn in Steam Egg, and a choice of dish from their main menu. We opted for Yam & Chicken Claypot. The dessert that came with the set was Red Bean Soup.

Mixed Roast Platter

Mixed Roast Platter

The 3-mixed roast plattercame first. It was pathetic. The Char Siew didn’t look quite as appealing as it should, and the serve size of the Roast Chicken was measly even for 4 people!!

Awesome tasting Soup!!

Awesome tasting Soup!!

The Soup (cannot remember its name) was actually quite good. I liked the depth and the amount of ingredients swimming within. Simply loved it!!

Seafood Fried Rice

Seafood Fried Rice

The Seafood Fried Rice was ample. I was all right with it, Mom liked it, but Sis-in-law wasn’t too impressed… To me, the bits of prawns were fresh…The fried rice could do with more Wok Hei though!

Yam & Chicken Claypot

The next dish that came was the Yam & Chicken Claypot. Everyone quite liked this except Bro and Sis-in-law. I guess its not to their taste bud. Wifey found the gravy to be excellent and I think we can finish up bowls and bowls of rice just on the gravy alone!!

From here on, everything just goes to hell… The waitress actually wanted to clean up the tables and dish out the dessert, but I mentioned that we were still missing another dish. One of the head-waitress scurried around before squeaking something about the dish is coming soon and disappeared…

Prawn in Steam Egg

Prawn in Steam Egg

Almost 10 minutes later… it finally came… It was piping hot, so it obviously just came out of the steamer… The Prawn in Steamed Egg  was actually excellent!! The eggs were so smooth and delicious. Alas it came so late. It would’ve been prefect with the fried rice or steam rice. Dad was pretty peeved and I was like… whatever!! However, the way the prawns were steamed with the eggs, resulted in the prawns being over-cooked.

Red Bean Soup

Red Bean Soup

The dinner ended with another disappointment… The Red Bean Soup was way too watery and way too sweet…

All in all, the dinner for 6 came up to $141.95… not too bad I suppose. Looking back, it’d have been a little more worth it to go for their 6 pax set dinner for an extra $30 bucks. There were some hits and misses in all the dishes, but I really dislike the way they tried to brush off the forgotten dish. “Its coming… Its coming…” when the truth is “Sorry sir, we totally screwed up, please accept our apology”!
