Dian Xiao Er @ West Coast Plaza

29 MAR 2009

We went down to Dian Xiao Er (DXE) @ West Coast Plaza for a simple meal with the family.

Like all DXE in Singapore, the decor is similar, rustic woody. The only difference is that it did not seem to be as crowded as the other DXE branches…

Service was pretty good. Like… I accidentally dropped a chopstick and that sent 1x waitress rapidly approaching at the speed of light with a replacement… BEFORE I responded to the dropped chopstick.. WhOA…

We looked at the set menus, and went for their ‘healthy’ set meal ($98.00 for 5 pax), plus a Claypot ToFu ($10.80). The ‘healthy’ set resolved around item that has less salt and less oil. These include: Fish Maw Thick Soup with Black Fungus (木耳蟹肉鱼鳔羹) – sis-in-law requested for no Black Fungus, Chinese Spinach Superior Stock (上汤银鱼仔觅菜), Old-Style Steamed Fish Slices (古法蒸生鱼片), Braised Mushroom in Chinese Wine (黄酒焖鲍鱼菇), and one of their speciality duck: Duck Roasted with Ten Wonder Herb (十全烤鸭). The dessert (part of the set) was Gui Ling Herbal Jelly (龟苓膏).

This DXE speciality never disappoints… EVER… I just can never get enough of the duck!! Excellent!!

Fish Maw Thick Soup

Fish Maw Thick Soup

The Fish Maw Soup was fully loaded with many ingredients and lots of fish maw… Soup base was thick… Very nice!

Braised Mushroom in Chinese Wine

Another excellent dish… mushroom braised in Chinese wine… The thick gooey mushroom sauce was a winner with the family.

Chinese Spinach Superior Stock

The Chinese spinach in superior stock was rather bland…

OldStyle Steamed Fish Slices

OldStyle Steamed Fish Slices

The OldStyle Steamed Fish Slices were pretty bland too… So… does healthy equates to bland? and should it be due to lesser salt or no salt at all? Tasted like the latter… Arrgh! Give me the unhealthy stuff please!!

Claypot Tofu

Claypot Tofu

Ahh… something with taste… after the two below-par bland dish, the Claypot Tofu came across as outstanding… Especially the roast pork slices, which was a greatly welcomed inclusion…

Only one word to describe this dessert… “Forgettable”.

So, there were some hits and misses with the Healthy set. The family dinner for 6 came  to $129.35 which was inclusive of 10% set meal discount. Not too bad I suppose. Well, we will definitely be back, but not for the healthy set meal… Their ducks are just too good!

My Final Rating: 7/10
