Plaza Market Café @ Fairmont Singapore

21 MAR 2009

I was quite excited to try out the dinner buffet of Plaza Market Café @ Fairmont Singapore. Well, it’s a freebie as part of the Feed @ Raffles Gourmet Card I purchased recently. However, after reading several dismal reviews on the place, I made my reservation and went down to the place with no expectation.

The place was full… with several groups of people by the entrance looking on, obviously on the waiting list. We strolled in and were immediately seated. The place was brightly lit. Our foreign waiters were attentive with refilling our drinks, the changing of our plates, and were polite.

The buffet spread was extensive with a mix of international cuisine and local Peranakan dishes. However, to sum it all up, nothing was really spectacular enough to imprint a lasting impression except a couple of items, and yes, coming with no expectation was a good thing.

Here’s a brief run down of what we had…

A nice selection of bread...

A nice selection of bread...

We started off with a very nice selection of bread… but it was rather disappointing that they were actually pretty hard. Went well with the rather nice Corn Cream Soup.

Fresh Salad

Pesto & Pasta

Pasta & more Veggies!

Next, we had the Salad, Pesto and Pasta. The salad was refreshing with the dressing and all and the pasta was passable…

Fresh Juice Salmon

Fresh Juicy Salmon

Imagine never-ending flow of fresh juicy salmon for a salmon lover… Ahhh… I can eat this all day long!!

Fresh Prawns!!

Fresh Prawns!!

Love eating the prawns… dislike de-shelling them… and with that, I shall move on to the cooked food. As mentioned earlier, much of the local dishes on offer were Peranakan-ish, spicy and not all that spectacular…

The ngor hiang 五香 was pretty good.

However, the overall winner of best cooked dish of the whole buffet spread went to the braised pork… It was really delicious!

Curry Noodle

Curry Noodle

There was a chef cooking up curry noodle for all that wanted some, and wifey took a serving of that. Big mistake!! The whole thing was just bland!!

Roasted Pork

Roasted Pork

Out of the corner of my eyes, I saw fresh Roasted Pork being brought out and went in for more food! It looked very appealing… Alas, it tasted nowhere as good as it looked. I was greatly disappointed!! With that, we proceeded to the dessert…

The star of the night - Durain Pudding

The star of the night - Durian Pudding

Wow! Wow! Wow! The free-flow of durian pudding was probably the best thing that can be found within Plaza Market Café.

Nicely presented, but rather forgettable!!

More forgettable desserts!!

Forgettable Kuehs...

Standard Longan Cherry Almond Jelly

The rest of the desserts… such as the other puddings, the cakes, and the Peranakan kuehs were all very pretty and nicely presented… However, they were all rather forgettable with the exception of the almond jelly…

Well… to sum it up, the service was good, the place was decent. Food was average at best and if not for the free buffet voucher, this spread for two would had cost $90.00… and for that amount, IMO, the value is definitely not there… I dare say dining at Plaza Market Café is going to be a one-time affair for us…

My Final Rating: 6/10
