Smoochies @ 991B Alexandra Road

09 FEB 2009 – [INVITED SESSION]

Thanks to the invite from HGW, I find myself heading towards Alexandra to this relatively new eatery… Smoochies Bistro and Bar is REALLY well hidden away… deep within the compound of 991 Alexandra Road. So, my advice to all is: Make sure you have the number of this Bistro if you do not know its EXACT location. Here, its: 6276-7337.

Refreshing feel of the Interior

Pretty Pearly White with touches of Deep Dark Purples...

This secluded Bistro offers a nice alfresco dining area, with a live band playing on Tuesday and Thursday. The interior is very nicely done up, set in pretty pearly whites and accented with touches of purples and soft neon lights. Very refreshing feel if you ask me! The staffs were attentive & polite. The place is co-managed by the cheerful & cheeky Ivy and the insightful Max…

The food served here was scrumptious. Better still… and based on their menu, each item was priced very reasonably.

A platter of Fried Delights

Fried Delights platter (Rating: 7.75/10)
The platter is a selection of fried favourites which included miniature burgers, calamari rings served with tartar sauce, grilled spicy sausages that packed a bit of a punch (hot), and the Smoochies crispy chicken wings. Apparently, the chicken wings were marinated with the special Smoochies house recipe which made them rather unique… in a nice way of course! Very enjoyable platter overall and not at all oily. Delightful indeed!!

Beef Carpaccio (Rating: 8.25/10)
The beef carpaccio served there, like what Dawn described, is quite special… and definitely gratifying! Served with a soy-foie gras truffle dressing… it was just so DAMN GOOD. Also, I think I am addicted to anything foie gras… pfft!!

Gourmet Pizza

If my assumption is correct, we were served the Smoochies Smoked Duck Pizza. Not the star of the night (after tasting probably the best Beef Carpaccio ever). However, the different variety of pizza there ranges from $11-$15 and I think for the size its definitely value for money.

Baked Pork Ribs

Baked Pork Ribs (Rating: 8.5/10)
The main I had for the night was one of their house specialty. Its a healthy-sized slab of beautifully braised pork. Although called the ‘baked pork ribs’, it interestingly came without the ribs! So, no fear of getting messy/oily fingers! The dish was actually pretty delectable. Accompanied with a complex, tangy gravy, the appealing taste of the tender pork was the resultant of infusion with ingredients such as pineapple, beet root, wine and herbs over a slow braise. Topped with stewed raisins, it added even more depth to the pork. The vegetables were fresh, and their mashed potatoes were pretty good too!

I got to a little taste of the Rack of Lambs, which left a decent impression with the unique tamarind-based sauce. To me, the pasta Penne Prima Vera (I think) was not as spectacular as their ribs or lamb…

Garlic Prawns

Another dish served was their pan-fried Garlic Prawns that’s infused with white wine, garlic and chili oil which I missed out on… Looking at the picture of the dish taken, the Garlic Prawns looked rather alluring!! Another item I did not try was the Baked Chilean Cod Fish. Served with asparagus, edameme and mashed potatoes, it seemed to be a winner for fellow reviewer Dawn. Saving myself for their dessert, I pass on their Fettuccine Julienne which was topped with juicy looking strips of beef… and that took discipline!!

Warm Chocolate Lava Cake

The finale for the night was the sinful chocolate lava cake served with quality vanilla ice-cream. This is as good as any lava cakes one can get… The light yet firm exterior encompassed the sinfully delicious sweet gooey molten Valrona chocolate. Just heavenly!!

Heres another...

Here's another...

Smoochies is relatively spacious, and serves as a great relaxing hangout after hours… especially with their extensive drinks-list. Being so secluded, one can party late into the night without too much worries… especially on nights with live band (Tue/Thurs) as well as Fri/Sat nights. From what I understand, the place also caters for company/private functions.

Being relatively new, Smoochies is currently running a 2-course and 3-course lunch promotion. I am already planning a lunch trip there!

My Final Rating: 7.75/10
