Perla’s Pastry Boutique – Impressive…
13 JAN 2009
In the quest to search for good Tiramisu, Bro & I went down to Perla’s Pastry Boutique after reading Sihan’s review on HGW on their Tiramisu.
Finding the place at night was not too hard and did not take too much time AS LONG AS you drive. VERY pretty in pink, the place is very nicely decorated. Too bad its solely for take-away (no seating available). However, the posh-ness of Perla makes it an extremely pleasant place to be in!
Looking at their display, I came across the empty tray with the label Tiramisu… ARGH!! I enquired and was told fresh ones are made every Tuesday and the current batch has not set yet. ARRRGHH!!
Meanwhile, Bro was asking lots of questions about the sweet goodies on show and we were offered a mini chocolate roll (possibly a mini version of their Salame Di Cioccolato – retail @ $2.00 each) and it was very nice. It’s a mixture of both dark & milk chocolate with cookie within. Apparently, the large ones are usually presented thinly sliced, and serve with a scoop of Vanilla ice-cream. We were also offered their Pineapple Tart each and gosh was it GOOD. The pineapple filling within is solid and nice with just the right level of sweetness and the pastry crumbles evenly… Although its really good, I found it to be a tad pricy, selling at $48 per tray of 24 pieces 50 pieces, and its buy 5 trays get 1 tray free. Last day for ordering is 22nd JAN 2009!
Well, I decided not to leave empty-handed especially after the generous sampling… (Frankly, even without sampling I’d have bought sometime to fill that Tiramisu void). In the end we bought a Panna Cotta ($8.80), one of the cookie strip (10 cookies for $5.80), and a 9″ Cannella Apple Tart with Pine nuts ($36.00). Paid-up and head home to devour our sweet desserts… but not before being impressed again by their pretty pink bag and gigantic pink box that hold our goodies. Bro passed me one of their name card he took and its looked impressive… No joke… all bling bling!!
Panna Cotta (Rating: 7.5/10)
Presented in a cup, you cannot distinguish it between Tofu or Panna Cotta… Its basically a concoction derived from cooked milk, cream and vanilla and served with strawberry sauce. Bro and sis-in-law loved this. I had a taste, and it was silky smooth, with milky taste. Not really my type of dessert. High rating because Bro was like “OMG… This is Gooooood”
Cannella Apple Tart (Rating: 7.75/10)
This apple cinnamon tart looked beautiful and tasted wonderful. The pastry is very nice and all of us liked the sweetness of the apple within… I felt… if the amount of icing sugar or the overall sweetness of the tart is lowered by one or two notch, it’d be perfect. No matter what, I think this tart will make a delightful dessert gift…
Well, Perla’s pastry boutique is definitely worth a visit. I know I will be back soon… for their Tiramisu!
My Final Rating: 7.5/10
