Hong’s Oyster Pancake Shoppe @ Amoy Street Food Center
31 DEC 2009
New Year’s Eve… The last day of 2008…
Met wifey near her work place for lunch and decided to get something inexpensive (been spending way too much recently… hehe) and that brought us to Amoy Street Food Center for some of our favorites Hawker goodies!
Hong’s Oyster Pancake Shoppe (#02-102) serves up a variety of deep fried stuffs such as Oyster Pancakes, Carrot Cake Fries, Pork Rolls, Steamed Tapioca Cakes, and Onde Onde.
The Oyster Pancakes are deep-fried batter thingy shaped like a disc and thus nicknamed “UFO”. Within the batter, there are a mixture of minced pork, fresh oyster, and probably coriander. Peanuts are added onto the surface and the whole gooey batter disc is dipped into piping hot oil until it turns crispy golden. Chopped into 4 and it is served. Eat while its hot to experience a mixture of sensations from the crispy exterior, and the tasty moist interior which is enhanced by the unique mixture of the oyster/minced meat and coriander. Divine… but oily and not for the health freaks…
The Carrot Cake Fries is made from the normal day-in, day-out squarish Carrot Cake. It’s just served differently… Chopped into thick strips, its deep-fried a second time before being served. It is 8 pieces for $1 if I remember correctly.
We also had their Pork Roll before, but to me it was nothing spectacular… average at best and cost around $3 per Pork Roll! We have yet tried the tapioca cake or onde onde, but will most likely come back sometime in 2009!
