Crispy Skin Suckling Pig (沙皮猪) from Tiong Bahru

20 DEC 2008

One of the roast meat stall in Tiong Bahru has caught my attention all these while, and I thought it’d be a nice surprise to get Brother a Crispy Roast Suckling Pig for his birthday…

A rather odd gift I know… but he did mention how he missed the crispy roast suckling pig rice he use to eat @ Ang Mo Kio Hub food court.

Negotiated briefly with the lady boss (well, she seemed to be the boss… wielding a cleaver and all from behind the chopping board), and the order was made for a crispy suckling pig (沙皮猪) for $150.00. Now, I have to add: there’s another roast pig specialist stall within this food center which charges $128.00 for their roasted pigs (plus $5.00 for delivery). The one from this shop was $22.00 more expensive but we managed to get them to deliver for free (I think they decided to deliver for free because we are not too far away from them). Hmmm… now I wonder… if I pitted the price of the other stall against this stall’s $150.00… would I get a better deal? Maybe next time!

The delivery of the suckling pig was greatly anticipated… It came right on time and it was still warm!

To be frank, I can’t really tell if it is worth the extra money, but this pig got the nod of approval from everyone in the family including mom. The meat was really tender, and it went really well with the sweet sauce and the killer chilli sauce. Personally, I thought the skin could’ve been slightly more crispier, but that is probably high expectation on my side.

See almost smell it from here... :)

Well, I think that was definitely worth the $150.00 for sure. In the end, it was more than enough to feed 6 hungry adults for dinner… with enough left-overs for mom & dad’s lunch the next day. Mom even stewed the pig’s head with mei cai 梅菜 as a extra dish for our subsequent dinner. How about that!

Hmmm… I can foresee myself returning for their roast ducks and roast chicken rice in the not too distant future!!
